JAMB CAPS 2026: how to check, accept and secure your admission
The essential facts.An offer you have not accepted on the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS)is not a valid admission. Check your status at efacility.jamb.gov.ng. Every year, a number of Nigerian candidates lose a place they had actually been offered. Not because they failed, and not because the place was given away unfairly — but because nobody told them that an offer sitting unaccepted on CAPS eventually lapses.
This guide covers the mechanics: how to check your status, what each status actually means, how to fix the most common blocker, and what to do when your O'Level results are short of the requirement.
1. The two deadlines you cannot miss

The first one catches people by surprise. JAMB extended the window for candidates who were offered admission in earlier cycles and never responded — some of whom have long assumed they were simply not admitted. If you applied any year from 2021 and never saw a definitive rejection, log in and look. It costs nothing to check, and the alternative is finding out after the fact.
Why acceptance is not a formality. Until you click accept, your name occupies a slot the institution cannot confirm and cannot reallocate cleanly. The system resolves this by expiring the offer. There is no appeal built into that process, which is why the date matters more than any other in this article.
2. How to check your admission status
- Go to efacility.jamb.gov.ng
- Sign in with the email address and password you registered with (not your registration number)
- Click Check Admission Status
- Select your exam year and enter your JAMB registration number
- Open your CAPS profile
Once inside CAPS, the Admission Status section shows whether an institution has proposed you for admission, and gives you the Accept and Reject buttons when an offer exists.
Accepting an offer
Open the offer, read the institution, course and level carefully, then click Accept Admission. Print or screenshot the confirmation immediately — you will need it at physical registration.
Rejecting an offer
Reject only if you have a concrete alternative. Rejecting returns you to the pool, but it does not guarantee a second offer, and there is no undo button. A course you did not rank first at an institution you did not rank first is still a place at university; weigh that against a year out before you click.
3. "No offer yet" — what it actually means
This is the message that causes the most panic, and it rarely means what candidates assume. There are three ordinary explanations, and only one of them requires action from you.

That last one is not a trivial detail. A significant share of "CAPS is not working" reports are a mobile rendering problem: the status panel does not display properly on a phone browser in mobile mode. Before concluding anything about your admission, open the portal on a desktop — or tick Desktop Site in your browser menu.
4. The blocker that stops most candidates: unlinked O'Level results
An institution cannot consider you if it cannot see that you meet the entry requirement. If your O'Level result is not uploaded and correctly linked to your JAMB profile, you are effectively invisible to the admission process, no matter how good your UTME score is.
Check three things, in this order:
- Is the result uploaded at all? Verify inside your JAMB profile, not from memory.
- Is it linked to the right registration number? A result uploaded against a different year or a mistyped number does not attach.
- Do the subjects match your course requirements? This is the silent killer — see below.
The subject combination trap
Uploading a valid result is not the same as uploading a qualifying result. Every course carries a required subject combination, and a candidate who holds five credits in the wrong five subjects does not meet the requirement.
The rule that applies almost everywhere: five credits, including English Language and Mathematics, plus the specific subjects your course demands. A prospective engineering student needs Physics and Chemistry in that set; a prospective medical student needs Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Credits in unrelated subjects do not substitute.
Check your course requirement against the JAMB brochure before concluding that your result is sufficient.
5. Combining WAEC and NECO when you are short of credits
This is the situation facing a large number of candidates this cycle. In the 2026 WASSCE, 61.54 % of candidates — 1,200,514 people — got five credits including English and Mathematics. The remaining share did not, in that sitting.
Combining results from two examination bodies is a recognised route, accepted by many Nigerian universities, and it exists precisely for candidates who cleared some subjects in one sitting and the rest in another.
How it works in practice
- You sit WAEC, and separately NECO
- Each subject credit counts once, from whichever sitting you passed it in
- Together, the two results must produce the five required credits including English and Mathematics
- Both results must be uploaded and linked to your JAMB profile
Three conditions to verify first
1. Your institution accepts combined results. Many do. Not all do, and some accept combination for certain faculties only. This is an institution-level policy, not a national rule — confirm it in the school's own admission requirements before you build a plan around it.
2. Most institutions cap it at two sittings. Combining across three or more sittings is generally not accepted.
3. Both results must actually be visible on your profile. Which brings us to the most common failure of all.
The mistake that repeats every year. Candidates upload one result, assume the system will automatically pick up the second, and never verify. It does not work that way. Upload both, then open CAPS and confirm that both appear. The five minutes that check takes are the difference between an admission and a lost cycle.

6. A realistic order of operations for the next four weeks
- Today — log into CAPS on a desktop browser. Establish what your status actually is, rather than what you assume it is.
- If an offer is showing — accept it, unless you hold a firm and better alternative. Save the confirmation.
- If no offer is showing — verify that your O'Level result is uploaded and linked, and that the subject combination matches your course.
- If you are short of credits — confirm your target institution accepts combined WAEC and NECO results, then upload both and verify both appear.
- Before 30 September — deal with any pending offer from an earlier year.
- Before 31 October — ensure the 2026 acceptance is completed. This deadline does not move for individuals.
7. Frequently asked questions
Is my admission valid if I have not accepted it on CAPS? No. Acceptance on CAPS is what makes it valid. An unaccepted offer can expire.
Can I still be admitted if I reject an offer? Possibly, but nothing is guaranteed and the action cannot be reversed. Reject only with a concrete alternative in hand.
CAPS shows nothing at all. Has my application been lost? Almost certainly not. Check in this order: are you on a mobile browser in mobile mode; has your institution uploaded its list yet; is your O'Level result linked. Those three explain the overwhelming majority of empty CAPS pages.
Do all universities accept combined WAEC and NECO results? Many do, but it is an institution-level policy and it sometimes varies by faculty. Confirm with your specific institution rather than relying on what applied to a friend elsewhere.
How many sittings can I combine? Generally two. Combining three or more is usually not accepted.
I passed five subjects but was still rejected. Why? Most likely the subject combination. Five credits without English and Mathematics, or without the specific subjects your course requires, does not meet the requirement.
After the admission letter comes the harder part
Getting the place is one milestone. What follows — the internship application in your second year, the industrial attachment, the graduate scheme — is decided by a document most students only start thinking about when it is already urgent.
